Last week as I was scrolling my Facebook feed, I saw the notification about Facebook fundraiser for NGOs. I have seen celebrities raising funds for NGOs, but I wasn’t aware that I or for that matter anyone can raise funds for an NGO through Facebook.
This FB notification was shown on my feed when my birthday was just around the corner. And the notification says If I want to raise funds for an NGO as a way to celebrate my birthday. I thought to myself, well this is cool and I checked it out.
However, as I scroll through the list of NGOs, I wasn’t able to find an NGO which I’m familiar with. Don’t get me wrong, indeed I can donate with any NGO for a good cause. But hey, when it comes to donating to NGOs, I’m conservative to whom I donate. It’s because I have seen many namesake NGOs in my home state who are just looting public money.
I come from a state where you will find all sorts of NGOs being run by educated unemployed youths, uneducated unemployed youths, the highly educated employed, religious leaders, Govt employees, politicians, business people, etc.
As per NGO Darpan portal, there are 1935 NGOs from Manipur registered with NGO DARPAN (the number of NGOs in the state can be much higher as there are many who have not registered in NGO Darpan). This is the highest among the 8 NE states. Manipur has more NGOs than the total combination of 6 other NE states namely Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.
Assam has 1678 registered NGOs at the NGO Darpan portal. But then take into account the population of Assam and Manipur. Assam has more than 3 crores population and Manipur has over 27 lakhs population as per 2011 census (I know the census is pretty old, but I’m stating it just to give you the brief idea of the ratio of the number of registered NGOs to the number of population of the state).
Again, just take the average of the total number of NGOs and the number of districts in Manipur. That’s an average of 120 NGOs per district. Now Ukhrul District has 96 villages as per the official Ukhrul District website. That’s like more than 1 NGO for each village!!!
