Gone are the days when you need to be a photoshop pro to colorize old B&W photos. But times have changed. And now with the advancement in Artificial Intelligence (AI)and deep learning, one can easily colorize old black & white photos with just a click of a button. We have now many apps and websites that use AI and deep machine learning to colorize old photos.
Here are my favorite websites that I use to colorize old B&W photos.
And here’s an old photo of a man sitting in front of a house with carved front at Chingjaroi village. This photo was taken by Ursula Graham on 21/02/1939.
Let’s use this 83 yrs old photo to colorize it and see the results.
1. Photomyne
Photomyne is one of the premium app/website that provides colorizing features. Their app has over 30M downloads, 315M images scanned and used in over 200 countries. I find this app the best in terms of results, and ease of use. However, the free version is very limited. For pro, their pricing starts at around 60$ per year.
2. DeepAI
The second on my favorite list is DeepAI website. Deepai.org is a website with a vast collection of AI projects API, among which one popular API is Image Colorization API. You can also use their APIs on your websites and projects.
3. Hotpot
Apart from colorizing old black & white photos, Hotpot website offers a range of image editing features like background removal, photo restoration, personalized art, text to art, and a host of other AI applications. You can also use their APIs on your website or applications.

I also checked out their photo restoration feature and here’s the result of photo restoration.
And here’s the result of colorization on the photos that’s been restored using their photo restoration AI.
Though their features are free, the free version is limited in download size. You will need to buy their credits to download it in full size.
4. Colorize.cc
Colorize.cc is another website where you can convert old black and white photos to colors. Apart from colorization, it also offers photo restoration, portrait generation, and also video colorization. However, it’s mostly paid services. And what I don’t like about their free service is that it comes with a big ugly watermark!
